Book OnlineWhat Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic system rooted in thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses hair-thin, sterile needles inserted at precise points on the body to regulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, restore healthy circulation, and activate the body’s own healing mechanisms. In TCM, these points lie along pathways called meridians — channels through which Qi (vital energy) flows. When Qi is blocked or disrupted, dysfunction and pain result. When flow is restored, the body can heal.
Modern neuroscience has validated many of acupuncture’s mechanisms. Needle insertion triggers local and systemic release of endorphins, serotonin, and other natural pain-modulating compounds. It reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines that sustain chronic pain and tissue dysfunction. It regulates the autonomic nervous system — shifting the body from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominance into the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state where healing occurs. And it stimulates local microcirculation to injured tissue, accelerating repair at the cellular level.
At Thrive Wellness, Dr. Fuller integrates these classical mechanisms with his extensive sports medicine and functional medicine background — creating acupuncture treatments that address pain, injury, hormonal dysfunction, digestive health, stress, and systemic inflammation in a way that purely symptomatic care cannot match. Acupuncture at Thrive Wellness is frequently combined with Rehab & Postural Alignment Therapy, Therapeutic Massage, Functional Medicine, and EMDR Therapy for patients whose conditions benefit from a truly integrated approach.

Sports Medicine Acupuncture: A Kinetic Chain Approach
What distinguishes Dr. Fuller’s approach to sports injuries and pain at Thrive Wellness is the kinetic chain perspective he brings from his sports medicine background. Where conventional acupuncture treats the site of pain, sports medicine acupuncture assesses the entire movement system — identifying the upstream dysfunctions in hip mechanics, thoracic mobility, ankle function, and neuromuscular control that create the loading patterns producing injury and pain downstream.
This means a runner presenting with Achilles tendinitis receives not just needling of the Achilles but a full assessment of hip extension mechanics, calf-complex loading patterns, and pelvic stability — and a treatment plan that addresses all of it. A swimmer with shoulder impingement receives assessment of scapular mechanics, thoracic rotation, and rotator cuff neuromuscular control — not just shoulder needles. This systems-level approach is why patients who come to Thrive Wellness after months of unsuccessful conventional treatment frequently experience rapid, lasting improvement.
For patients who need structural retraining alongside the acupuncture work, Dr. Fuller’s Rehab & Postural Alignment Therapy program provides the corrective movement education that prevents injuries from recurring after treatment.

Patients consistently describe Dr. Fuller as someone who explains complex health concepts clearly, sees connections other practitioners miss, and produces results that previous treatment hadn’t achieved.
What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Visit
Your first acupuncture appointment at Thrive Wellness in San Diego, CA begins with a thorough intake covering your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. Dr. Fuller uses Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic tools — pulse diagnosis and tongue assessment — alongside Western movement and postural evaluation to build a complete picture of your condition.
Treatment involves the gentle placement of ultra-thin, sterile needles at specific points. Most patients feel little to no discomfort — the most common sensations are mild tingling, warmth, or a deep sense of relaxation. You’ll rest quietly for 20–30 minutes, and many patients fall asleep. Following your session, Dr. Fuller may recommend herbal formulas, specific exercises, or lifestyle adjustments to support your progress between visits.
Single sessions are $175. 4-session packages ($600) and 12-session packages ($1,740) are available at a discount. Integrative Care Packages combining acupuncture with functional medicine are also available. All services covered by HSA and FSA. Visit our Pricing & Packages page or call (619) 984-4317 for details.
Acupuncture & Sports Medicine FAQs
Does acupuncture hurt?
For the vast majority of patients, acupuncture at Thrive Wellness is comfortable and often deeply relaxing. The needles are significantly thinner than hypodermic needles — most patients describe the sensation as mild tingling, warmth, or a sense of heaviness or relaxation at the needle site. Sharp or uncomfortable sensations are uncommon, and if they occur Dr. Fuller will adjust or remove the needle immediately. Many patients are surprised by how comfortable their first session is.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
This depends on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute issues — a recent injury or acute pain flare — often respond in 3–6 sessions. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically require 8–15 sessions for lasting resolution. At Thrive Wellness, Dr. Fuller provides a realistic treatment timeline at your first appointment and adjusts his recommendations as you progress. Our 4-session and 12-session packages make committing to a full course of care more affordable — visit our Pricing & Packages page for details.
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Dry needling targets motor points and trigger points within specific muscles using acupuncture-style needles, based on Western anatomy and neuroscience rather than TCM meridian theory. Traditional acupuncture uses a classical point system along meridians to regulate systemic function, organ systems, and energetic balance. At Thrive Wellness, Dr. Fuller integrates both approaches — drawing on TCM point protocols for systemic effects and motor point needling for direct muscular and neuromuscular intervention — producing more comprehensive results than either technique alone.
Can acupuncture be combined with other Thrive Wellness services?
Yes — and combining services often produces significantly better outcomes than acupuncture alone. The most effective combinations at Thrive Wellness include acupuncture with Postural Alignment Therapy for chronic structural pain, acupuncture with Functional Medicine for hormonal imbalance and fatigue, and acupuncture with Therapeutic Massage for athletic recovery and chronic tension. Our Integrative Care Packages bundle acupuncture with functional medicine follow-ups at a discounted rate — visit our Pricing & Packages page.
Can acupuncture help with anxiety and stress?
Yes — acupuncture is one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical tools for anxiety and stress regulation. It reduces cortisol, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and regulates the HPA axis dysregulation that underlies chronic stress and anxiety. For patients with both physiological and psychological contributors to anxiety, combining acupuncture with EMDR Therapy & Counseling often produces the most comprehensive and durable results.
Is acupuncture covered by HSA or FSA?
